Eight Special Nights of Chanukah
Chanukah begins on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, which this year falls on Tuesday evening, December 4. But whether it’s closer to Thanksgiving or Christmas, or somewhere in between, you can be sure that the sun will set early and the nights will be long.
Why not use Chanukah as an amazing opportunity to turn eight consecutive nights during the dark and chilly winter into moments of light and sharing for your family. First light the Chanukah candles, and then engage the whole family in special activities.
Here are some “themes” for having a festive holiday. Try some of these or make up your own.
Reading Night: Find a fun book and let everyone who can, read aloud to the family.
Grandparents Night: Invite over someone old enough to be a grandparent and enjoy his/her stories.
Baking Night: Make cookies and decorate them, then give some away to your neighbors (and eat the rest).
Music Night: Sing, play instruments and dance.
Theater Night: Go out to one of the many plays, ballets or concerts being performed.
Crafts Night: Get a book on crafts or search the internet. Make paper boxes or holiday decorations or ornaments or a menorah with oven-bake clay.
Performance Night: Give the kids old clothes and let them make up a play and put it on for you.
Friends Night: Invite over your best friends and talk all night.
Fireplace Night: Make a fire and toast marshmallows and make "somemores".
Games Night: Play all the games you know – board games, interactive games like charades, and dreidle.
Love Night: Make your own cards and send them to five people you love.
However you decide to celebrate, have a fun, festive family holiday, filled with old -- and new -- traditions.
