When Jewish Family & Children Services (JF&CS) and Temple Beth El in San Mateo held focus groups with interfaith couples, one of the things they learned is that people confuse religion with culture.
“Couples need to find a common language to understand what interfaith means,” explains Yael Moses, director of adult services at of JF&CS.
JF&CS and Temple Beth El are collaborating to provide support groups and workshops for the congregation’s interfaith families. The focus groups were held to learn more about the concerns of both Jewish and non-Jewish partners. In many cases, Moses says, the concerns were less about religion and more about culture and tradition.
The congregation is planning an eight-session series – part education, part support group – to be led by Moses and Temple Beth El’s Rabbi Alan Berg. Each meeting will have a different topic.
In addition, Moses said, they are planning to hold future groups in collaboration with the Jewish Community Center for the community.
