Congregation Kol Shofar, in Tiburon, is a Conservative congregation that has a significant number of interfaith families on its membership role – probably more than any other Conservative temple in the Bay Area, according to program director Michael Saxe-Taller.

While interfaith families are usually more likely to join Reform congregations, Marin County has a large interfaith population, and like its Reform counterpart Congregation Rodef Sholom, Kol Shofar invites interfaith and intercultural families to join the congregation.

The Kol Shofar website reflects its hospitality. “We extend our warm welcome to all Jews, regardless of affiliation, and to any and all non-Jews who wish to be part of our community,” it says.

“We are constantly looking at how to welcome and integrate interfaith families in a community that is a traditional Conservative congregation,” notes Saxe-Taller. The congregation’s board has set up an interfaith task force to consider specific educational and other opportunities that may be offered in the future.

In the meantime, intermarried families participate in a wide range of activities at the synagogue including the monthly Shir Chadash musical Shabbat and monthly Tot Shabbat.
