Beth Schecter, director of the Peninsula branch of Jewish Family and Children’s Services, notes that interfaith families are an integral part of the Jewish community, and thus participate fully in the agency’s Jewish programming. “It’s a huge part of our population,” she says.
Whether we’re talking about activities through the Jewish pre-schools, the agency’s Single Parent Center, teen programs, or the extensive outreach to seniors, members of interfaith families take part, Schecter says. At Single Parent Center programs, for instance, it’s not unusual to find a divorced non-Jewish mom there to support her children, who are Jewish like their dad. Seniors who participate in JF&CS Jewish programs frequently have children in interfaith marriages. Interfaith families also utilize the variety of other services offered by JF&CS, including parenting support from Parents Place and counseling help for a wide range of issues.
In the past, the Peninsula JF&CS has sponsored a variety of programs specifically for interfaith families, and recently has been instrumental in working with Congregation Beth El to run a recent interfaith support group. They are ready to provide support groups or counseling services to anyone interested. “We have a staff that’s well versed in interfaith issues. If there is a need, we are here to help,” Schecter emphasizes. “Just let us know.”
