San Rafael Reform Congregation Rodef Sholom has instituted a new way to celebrate Shabbat, the Jewish sabbath. By providing early services, babysitting and pre-dinner snacks, the congregation aims to make the observance accessible and easy for the community. The goal, according to the temple’s rabbis, is to make Shabbat transformational.

Shabbat observance each Friday night will include an early service beginning at 6:15 p.m., preceded by a wine and cheese oneg (reception) at 5:45 p.m. each week. Babysitting is available for children ages 3 to 7.

Additionally, on the third and fourth Friday, a second service will be held at 8 p.m. with an oneg following it. Shabbat services at Rodef Sholom are joyous and participatory, with music and singing led by Cantor David Margules, various musicians and song leaders.

Congregation Rodef Sholom’s Rabbi Michael Lezak believes that Shabbat is the single most important holiday in Judaism. He encourages everyone to observe it each week, choosing a method that works for his or her family and lifestyle. You can attend temple, have a meal with family at home (even if it’s burritos from the nearby taco stand), light candles together, or create a ritual of your own. The important thing is to consistently observe it in some way, he says.
