According to the Jewish Community Federation’s recent Jewish Community Study, about 70 percent of Jewishly-identified families in Marin County include a non-Jewish partner. The Open Tent committee at Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael is a new group dedicated to developing programming for interfaith families to help them feel more comfortable in a synagogue and provide information on Jewish holidays.

The committee, which is chaired by congregation members Toni Golbus and Joanne Abrams, both Jews-by-choice, chose the name based on the three-sided tent of the biblical patriarch Abraham. With just three sides, one side was always open and welcoming.

That’s the image they wish to project – that of a big tent, open to all, no matter how they choose to practice Judaism.

The weekend of November 17 will focus on the Open Tent committee at Rodef Sholom. It will begin with a Shabbat dinner on Friday night, followed by a “learning” service. On Sunday, November 19 at 9:20 a.m., the congregation’s regular program “Exploring the World of Judaism” will feature a panel discussion with members of the Open Tent committee. All are welcome to attend.

The committee plans to offer ongoing programs, including a basic Judaism course taught by Rabbi Noa Kushner, as well as a mentoring program for those who wish to be partnered with long-time congregation members. The Open Tent committee encourages anyone interested to contact the congregation.
