Interfaith Connection, a program of the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, was started 20 years ago by Rosanne Levitt as a response to the growing number of interfaith families in the Bay Area. The program was cutting edge in 1986 and continues to evolve to meet the diverse needs of San Francisco interfaith/intercultural couples and families.

We offer a myriad of unique opportunities to explore religious and cultural identity, raising children, building healthy relationships and finding the right community. Our discussion groups, cultural outings, educational workshops and holiday dinners also allow participants to build relationships with one-another, creating friendship groups that often last for many years.

Recently, from October 6 through 8, Interfaith Connection co-sponsored with a number of Bay Area synagogues an interfaith weekend organized by Camp Tawonga. I was lucky to attend this wonderful event with my family. Interfaith and intercultural couples and families from all over the Bay Area came together to talk, learn and have fun while celebrating Sukkot, a Fall harvest festival, in a beautiful, natural setting near Yosemite National Park.

It was an amazing experience on so many levels. We sang songs together by the campfire after a delicious Shabbat meal, many of us hiked together while learning with one of the rabbis and we all had opportunities to create works of art, paddleboat on the lake, meditate in the trees and participate in discussions about our relationships. We hope that the interfaith weekend will become an annual event representing Interfaith Connection’s commitment to community partnerships and innovative programming.
