How does the ancient bible impact contemporary life? What were our rabbis thinking when they wrote it? An afternoon filled with study and discussion about the Bible along with insightful interpretations by scholars will take place at fifth annual Bible by the Bay on Sunday, Oct. 21, 1 – 5 p.m., at Osher Marin JCC, San Rafael. An opening concert with music and poetry is slated for Saturday, Oct. 13, 7:30 p.m. at Congregation Kol Shofar, Tiburon.

Professor Susannah Heschel, Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College and the daughter of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, will kick off the day with a keynote address on The Uses and Misuses of the Bible: Race, Religion and Gender. Following the keynote, participants can choose two hour-long workshops. Among them are Moses and Freud with Prof. Naomi Janowitz; Singing the Bible with Cantor David Margules; Creative License: The Role of the Bible in Rabbinic and Medieval Innovations with Prof. Deena Aranoff; Occupied Territories or Promised Land: the Bible in the Political Debate in Israel with Rachel Biale; and It’s Not Easy Being Green: Mixed Messages from the Bible on the Role of Humans in Creation with Rachel Brodie.

The opening concert (held Saturday of the prior week) will feature Prof. Robert Alter reading from his new translation of psalms. Cantors Linda Hirschhorn and David Margules will sing selected psalms, which have been set to music. A Havdallah will precede the program.
