North Bay
Gan Halev, The Jewish Congregation of the San Geronimo Valley, and The Russian River Jewish Community are two congregations in the North Bay that offer eclectic celebrations and observance of Jewish holidays for families living in their areas. Both congregations serve a large percentage of interfaith families.
Situated in West Marin, Gan Halev is a congregation of “post-denominational” Jews representing a broad spectrum of Jewish life, practice and backgrounds. The congregation meets at the San Geronimo Valley Community Center and provides a variety of programs throughout the year. Its Penina Maier Jewish School offers Sunday School for children from pre-kindergarten to bar/bat mitzvah.
Rabbi Elisheva Salamo, formerly the rabbi at Cotati’s Congregation Ner Shalom, will lead High Holiday services, including a Tashlich service at Samuel P. Taylor State Park on Friday, Sept. 14.

The Russian River Jewish Community, based in Guerneville, was formed to provide a place for people with diverse backgrounds to explore Jewish culture and join in fellowship with other Jews. The group holds holiday celebrations, Shabbat potlucks, current event discussions, films and other activities. Music and song are an integral part of the group’s gatherings.
RRJC will hold its “Rosh Hashanah in the Redwoods” on Friday, Sept. 14 in Armstrong Woods. The annual Jewish new year celebration includes a potluck feast, readings, singing and dancing to the music of Jubilee Klezmer Ensemble.
